Peter Kwaku Anto, a taxi driver has been dragged to a Kumasi High Court for raping a 90-year-old blind woman at Nyamebekyere, a suburb of Obuasi.
Anto is alleged to have crept into the room of the blind old woman who was staying alone on several occasions to commit the heinous crime usually at night.
The daughter of the victim, Akua Gyasiwaah who is the complainant told the Court that Anto became friends with the old woman somewhere in 2014 after assisting her claim her NHIS card and visited the victim occasionally after work.
The blind woman after sometime would complain to her daughter that she had not been sleeping well as someone had been entering her room and been forcibly having sex with her.
Gyasiwaah in her quest to ascertain the truth decided to pass the night on June 18, 2015 with her at Nyamebekyere.
Coincidentally, on the said night Anto forcibly pushed the door opened while they were asleep and entered the room.
Gyasiwaah quickly woke up and shouted for help and a surprised Anto responded that he was not there to steal but was bringing the blind woman’s card.
When asked to produce the card the taxi driver was unable to do so and was later identified as he spoke by the victim.
He was arrested the following day at a family gathering where he had brought some elders to plead on his behalf.
A medical examination conducted on the victim revealed she was indeed raped and had been infected with syphilis.
Charles Adjei Wilson, the presiding judge remanded Anto into prison custody after he surprisingly pleaded not guilty to the rape charge preferred against him.
