KATH loses revenue to patients who fail to pay bills

Reports have revealed that some patients who go on admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) often leave the hospital after discharge without settling their bills.

According a news report by Kasapa FM, these occurrences have managed to run down the hospital’s surgical directorate; the unit now runs at a loss.

The investigative piece also showed that some patients were able to leave the hospital after discharge without settling their bills whereas others were able to illegally negotiate for a reduction in the actual amount to pay.

The report further indicated that the Medical Director (MD) of KATH Dr. Baffour Awuah aided some patients to leave after agreement to settle the bill at a later date.

Meanwhile, the hospital laws say, a patient would have to refer to the social welfare before payment of his/her bills can be delayed, yet several these ‘run away’ patients do not go through such procedures.
