Mahama to construct seperate blocks for remand prisoners

President Mahama says government plans to construct separate blocks for all remand prisoners in the country.

In a visit to the Wa prisons during his accounting to the people tour in the Upper West Region, the president says the move was part of efforts to boost the Justice for All program which is meant for securing justice for prisoners.

“I have asked that new remand blocks be built in the various prisons so that we can take them into a separate block and not mix them up with convicted prisoners and so we have started the first one in Accra; the contractor appointed has started working and I have asked that the second be built in Kumasi,” he revealed.

Thousands of prisoners are currently under remand across various prison cells in Ghana -  a development which has raised questions over the access to justice in Ghana's judicial system.
