Life gets more complicated when you’re older. People pair off, and it becomes more difficult to make plans. You become more committed to your job and have less free time. And your body physically ages—not to mention your memory begins to decline before age 30—so there’s that.
Here are yen.com.gh’s top 10 things that you should have done or should be doing if you have not clocked 30 yet.
1. Have at least a first degree
Though it can be expensive, going to college is definitely worth the investment. You’ll make friends, acquire connections, and be around (moderately) smart people all day, every day. The younger you do it, the better.
2. Travel to a foreign country
Being an active part of a different culture is an education that you can’t acquire on a manicured university campus — and it could help you become a more clever, compassionate, and grateful person.
3. Move out of your parent’s house
Sure, sticking around with Mom and Dad will save you tons of money. By the time you’re 29 though, you should really start thinking about getting your own place, not only for your own sake but for your parents’, who by that point are probably fantasizing about being empty-nesters day and night.
4. Learn a new language
It's never too late to pick up a new language, but starting when you're in your 20s is smart for lots of reasons. It could help your career, it makes traveling much easier, and studies have shown that multi-linguals are better decision makers. Plus, you probably have more free time right now than you will in your 30s, so it really is the best time to devote yourself to the task.
5. Set up a side business
Multiple streams of income have been advised by many financial experts and as you grow older, you realize your expenditure increases. Therefore to stay ahead of tough times and for a more secure financial base, you should start thinking of ways to monetize that hobby you are so good at or start a small business with your savings and grow your income.
6. Explore one of your wildest sexual fantasies
Before you get too tired of the hyper-life, you may want to explore that sexual fantasy you have been harboring at the back of your mind – waiting for the perfect girl or guy to come your way. Instead of waiting, push for execution.
7. Try a new sport
Everyone has that one sport they have always admired… from a distance though. Your 20’s are the best years to explore new sports and develop a hobby that could be part of the rest of your life. Since swimming is not included in the Ghanaian sporting curricula, people try to learn in their later years. Do it before you turn 30.
8. Do something that scares you
Overcome that fear you have or at least, face it head-on. It could be singing in a karaoke bar to a large unknown audience, bungee jumping, paragliding or anything that will get your adrenaline spiking or put you on the edge of life. Just make sure it is safe :)
9. Travel alone
It is not as scary as you think. Traveling alone gives you the opportunity to do and see things at your own pace without having to compromise with a other travel partners’ schedules. You will find yourself interacting with people you probably wouldn’t have if you were travelling with someone else.
10. Move to a new city or country
While you are young and free, it may be time to move to another city to work for a while. Looking for a new place to stay and learning the ways of the people of where you are about to live is a valuable life lesson about cultural integration and personal development.
