Former President Jerry Rawlings has admitted receiving $2 million from former Nigerian head of state, Sanni Abacha.
It was initially reported that he had received $5 million, but Rawlings claimed in an interview with Nigeria’s Guardian newspaper, that he received only $2 million.
According to him, the money was beneficial, as Ghana was preparing for constitutional rule and “needed funds for some activities”.
Rawlings' admission has, however, drawn criticism from some members of the public. Here are five of the top reactions:
1. Abdul Malik Kweku Baako
According to the editor-in-chief of the New Crusading Guide, Rawlings received $5 million from former Abacha and not $2million as the former president would have the world believe.
2. Hackman Owusu-Agyemang
The former minister of state believes Rawlings should be forgiven for admitting receipt of the money.
“He has confessed it and I think we should be magnanimous enough to say let bygones be bygones, but I think from him, we should learn lessons that the President should desist from taking gifts from persons or money and everything like that.”
3. Vitus Azeem
The anti-corruption crusader demanded further investigations into the matter.
“Nigerians and Ghanaians should be asking questions. The questions Nigerians should be asking includes, was it Sani Abacha’s private money that he sent to our former president? What was the purpose of giving that money?"
4. Henry Lartey
The flagbearer of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), Henry Lartey, called for Rawlings' prosecution.
“This is not a personal attack, but it is a sad moment for Ghana and Africa. He has disappointed his children and family for accepting a bribe. He should be investigated. Let the institutions work. He used all the institutions including the BNI against Ghanaians. So he should also be subjected to the same ordeal.”
5. JA Kufuor
Frank Agyekum, the spokesperson for former President John Kufuor, called on Rawlings to state what the $2 million was used for.
“If former President Rawlings has come out to say that he did take the money - the $2 million - it is for us to start asking questions like what happened to the money.”
