Photos of Nigerian identical triplets John, Peter and James Obidiegwu, who celebrated their birthday on July 7, have taken the Nigerian social media space storm.
Many social media users were fascinated by how identical the triplets were.
In a subsequent interview with Nigeria’s Punch newspaper, the triplets said it was so difficult to tell them apart that even their dad used to mix them up when he was alive.
“At first, it is always difficult. Even our dad also mixed us up sometimes. Also, the people that mix us most are the wives and husbands of our older siblings. Till date, they still find it hard to differentiate us. So, they just call the three of us one particular name, say, James. Some friends popularly call us, Peter, Peterer and Peterest,” John said.
James said their girlfriends also struggle to distinguish them sometimes.
“Girls are usually careful with us so they look for features that distinguish us. Definitely, if anybody spends quality time with us, the person will see the differences.”
Peter said growing up as triplets had not been smooth all through but that it had been very good.
“Being triplets is similar to being celebrities because people always stare at us wherever we go. We grew up in the South-West and the Yoruba people believe that twins are a blessing, so wherever we went to, we were always admired. Sometimes, people would tell us to pray for them or lay hands on them. So, it was fun growing up but not too rosy.”
Peter works with a mortgage bank; James works with a real estate/financial consultancy firm in Abuja. while John is an engineer.
The triplets are the youngest in a family of nine children.
