Government to pay nursing trainees GH¢1,500 allowance per month

The government has decided to pay 34,550 nursing students across the country a stipend of GH¢1,500 per month.

This was revealed in a statement signed by the minister for health, Alex Segbefia, on Thursday.

The decision to pay the stipend was taken by a technical committee set up by the president to review the government’s scrapping of nursing trainees’ allowances.

The amount will support the students as efforts are made to hook them onto the students’ loan scheme, the statement said.

To this end, the Students Loan Trust Act is set to be amended to enable students in non-tertiary health institutions access loans to support their education.

The government scrapped nursing trainees’ allowance because it limited the number of students who could be admitted to nursing schools across the country because of the huge sums required to pay the allowances.

The move was, however, opposed by students who say they need the allowances to support themselves. The development prompted the government to set up the committee to review its decision.
