Three members of a five-man armed robbery gang are said to have been gunned down by a police team in Kumasi on Monday night who foiled an armed robbery attack at Asuoyeboa.
The three and their two other accomplices currently on the run were on their way to rob a house behind SSNIT Flats at Asuoyeboa in Kumasi.
Osei Ampofo Duku, the deputy Ashanti regional police commander who confirmed the incident at a press briefing said after picking police intelligence, they laid ambush around 2am and subsequently spotted a taxi cab with five occupants onboard.
They were chased when they refused the signal to stop and engaged the police in a shoot-out which saw three of them being shot in the process.
They slowed down and all occupants got out and run into a nearby bush. The police in their search in the bush chanced upon the three men who had died from the gunshot wounds.
According to him the driver and one other suspect who the police believed sustained gunshot wounds, managed to escape.
The police retrieved two locally manufactured pistols, two mobile phones, two empty cartridges, a knife, a wood and a cash amount of GHC24 on them.
Ampofo Duku said one of the victims has been identified as Bernard Ali who was part of a gang of robbers who attacked a driver and his Chinese miner on July 21, this year leaving the driver dead whilst the miner managed to escape.
The police asked the public and health institutions to be on the look-out for the duo who escaped since they might turn in for care from the gunshot wounds sustained.
