Police arrest two baby thieves in Accra

Two women have been arrested by the James Town Police in Accra for allegedly stealing a one-month-old baby boy from his mother.

Police say suspects Joyce Asheley, 30, and Lamley Mills, 34, took the baby on July 8 from the side of his mother while she was fast asleep.

The mother of the baby, Joyce Oblitey Commey, is said to have woken up at midnight to breastfeed the child, but could not find him, prompting her to report to the police who launched an investigation into the matter.

Police said Joyce had earlier threatened to take the baby if his mother did not pay her a GH¢ 60 debt.

She claimed, according to the police, that she paid the medical bill of GHȻ60.00 before the child's mother was discharged from the hospital on June 8, 2016, when the child was born.

But police said when they invited her for questioning, she denied the allegation and added that she did not know the whereabouts of the child.

The police said they later got information on July 26, 2016, that the child was with a woman at Odorkor Official Town.

They proceeded to the location and found Lamley Mills with the baby.

She is to have mentioned Joyce as the one who brought the child to her for safe keeping.
