#SaveMayowa crowdfunding campaign is an elaborate scam

Mayowa Ahmed, the ovarian cancer patient who needed help for surgery was apparently lying to her donors.

According to Nigerian blogger Linda Ikeji, who shared the news of the scam this afternoon, Mayowa had reached stage 4 cancer status and had been told by doctors that she was going to die no matter what treatment was offered. Her family, however, took advantage of the situation and created a GoFundMe account to start a campaign to raise funds for her to undergo surgery.

Doctors said they  had told the family to take Mayowa home since she was on the brink of death and couldn’t be cured by any hospital in the world. They rejected the claims of handing the family a report that advised them to seek proper treatment outside the country.

Some members of the campaign who went to her family’s home also report that the building has been locked up.

Mayowa had been trending on social media earlier this week for help to conduct surgery in a hospital in the United States.

The #SaveMayowa campaign raised over $100k on GoFundMe and millions of Naira.
