Researchers are advising people to stop eating sausages in order to live longer.
According to researchers at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, exchanging just a small amount of sausages (processed red meat ) for plant protein reduces the risk of early death by 34 per cent.
They reached this conclusion after following more than 130,000 people for 36 years, monitoring their diet, lifestyle, illness and mortality.
They researchers say avoiding bacon and eggs could also extend life.
They research indicate that substituting eggs for plant protein could lead to a 19 per cent reduction in death risk.
"Our findings suggest that people should consider eating more plant proteins than animal proteins, and when they do choose among sources of animal protein, fish and chicken are probably better choices," the Telegraph quoted them as saying.
