Minister for sports and leading National Democratic Congress (NDC) member Nii Lantey Vaderpuije has stated that the presidency of Ghana is not for short people.
Mr Vaderpuije made the comment during the campaign launch of the NDC held at the Cape Coast stadium.
"The presidency is not for short people,” he said, drawing laughter from thousands of party faithful who had converged on the stadium.
The remark is being interpreted by some Ghanaians to mean a jab at opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo.
The NDC campaign launch was all NDC bigwigs, including President John Mahama and former President Jerry Rawlings.
President Mahama stated during his speech that his first term had bee very challenging, but successful.
“My first term in office has been a very challenging but positive and fruitful one. In all the challenges that we have faced, God has created an opportunity for us to lay a foundation for the sustainable development of our dear nation Ghana,” he said.
For his part, Mr Rawlings urged the party not to underestimate the NPP ahead of the December polls.
“The calculation I want to put before u is that by virtue of who they are will necessarily give rise of what you and I are in the NDC, we cannot afford to fight them on their terms it is important to fight them on our terms…let’s not us mimic their behavior… mimic them as some of you are doing and we will lose the elections,” he said.
