British High Commissioner to Ghana Jon Benjamin has called on the government to close down all witches camps in the country.

Mr Benjamin maintained in a speech at the launch of Ghana Domestic Research Report in Accra that there was no place for witches camps in the 21 century.

“Personally, I believe in the 21st Century, it’s time to say there is no such thing as a witch and to decry the practice of using such a term to dehumanize vulnerable women,” he was quoted as saying by the Heritage newspaper.

The ambassador stressed that keeping women in so-called witches camp was a violation of their human rights.

He added that the United Kingdom (UK) was committed to fighting against all forms of human right violations and would support Ghana in fighting against gender-based violence.
