In a new interview granted Etv Ghana, controversial counselor, George Lutterodt has said that a man can sleep with his brother’s wife if he represented him at a marriage ceremony.
According to the relationship counselor, representing others at their engagement is wrong.
“You are not in Ghana and you want to marry this fine lady and your family asks your brother to stand in for you. Libation is poured on you on behalf of your brother and when they finish, they call the husband abroad to let him know the ceremony is done.
When that happens, the one who stood in has the right to have sexual intercourse with the girl because traditionally the wife was given to whoever was present and the witnesses don’t know the one abroad. The whole point is that, engagement without the person marrying the girl is null and void spiritually and morally.”
It is quite common in Ghana for families to marry for their children in proxy, usually letting a close relative stand in for the marriage rites.
There have been cases where spouses only meet their spouses for the first time after a marriage has taken place only to find out that they married someone else than they thought.
