In the statement that announced the pardon, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Communications stated that the president had decided to pardon the three on "compassionate" grounds.

However, the remission has been criticised by many people, mostly members of the opposition party, New Patriotic Party. Some people have accused President Mahama of misusing his office whiles other believe the remission would undermine the power of the judiciary in Ghana.
