An unfortunate story of a poor man in India having to trek 7 miles while carrying his deceased wife on his shoulder has emerged.

The shocking footage that surfaced online showed Dana Majhi with his wife over his shoulders wrapped in sheets and his heartbroken teenage daughter by his side as he headed towards his home nearly 50 miles from the hospital in Bhawanipatna town, India.

It is alleged that the hospital where Dana’s wife died failed to provide an ambulance, yet insisted he moved the body out of the facility.

Since he could not afford a private ambulance, he decided to carry his 42-year-old wife - who had died from tuberculosis on Wednesday morning - on his shoulder home for the last funeral rites.

By the time an ambulance had arrived, courtesy of local youths who alerted officials, Mr Majhi had walked over seven miles towards his home in Melghar village.
