A total of sixteen babies have died at the Asonomaso Government Hospital in the Kwabre East District in the eight months.
The usually high number of infant deaths at the hospital has been attributed to the lack of an incubator at the facility.
Confirming the issue to the Accra-based 3FM, the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr Imrana Mahama pleaded that even a single incubator would help alleviate the stress on the hospital and reduce the high infant mortality rate.
The Asonomaso Goverment Hospital serves as a referal centre for the Kwabre East District and according to Dr Mahama, they have been forced to refer all premature births to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for incubation.
Dr. Mahama also called for an infrastructural expansion of the hospital.
According to Dr. Imrana Mahama, the daily number of patients the hospital receives has increased from 50 to about 200 and thus, puts pressure on their current facilities.
