The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has described Reverend Isaac Owusu Bempah of the Glorious Word International church as a "religious fanatic" who requires urgent "psychiatric treatment".
It comes after Owusu Bempah stated on Tuesday that some members of the NDC were plotting to assassinate the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo.
“There are some people who want to eliminate Nana Addo from this earth. But God has revealed those people to me. I have already spoken to some people to be on the lookout so that whatever vehicle Nana Addo sits in for his campaign will be well protected. The same goes to Alhaji Bawumia,” he said on Accra-based Rainbow Radio.
His claim has caused people to accuse the NDC of being behind the plot to get rid of Akufo-Addo.
In a reaction, the deputy general secretary of the NDC, George Lawson, said no true man of God would speak the way Owusu Bempah spoke.
Describing him as a prophet of doom and a religious fanatic, Lawson said it was unimaginable that the NDC would attempt to kill Akufo-Addo.
“Why should we call for Nana Addo’s elimination? We believe in every Ghanaian. Democracy is not about killing," he said.
Lawson said the fact that Ghana was in a democratic dispensation did not give anyone a licence to kill, stressing that no one in his right senses would do that.
"And the NDC will never want Nana Addo to die. We believe in divergent views, freedom of expression and we believe in all that. So, these are prophets of doom. Anytime they prophesy, it is about doom," he added.
