EC workers demand 50 percent pay rise and 30 gallons of fuel

Events in the run-up to the general elections get more interesting as workers of the electoral commission (EC) are demanding a 50 percent allowance of salary and thirty gallons of fuel on a monthly basis.

So far, all means of negotiation between the EC boss, Charlotte Osei and workers has proved futile

EC workers, in a leaked internal memo for negotiations delivered to the fair wages and salary commission, say their demand follows their inability to "engage in any social and political activities as staff members of a politically neutral organization".

This is not the first time employees of the electoral commission have raised concerns about the payment of some allowances due them. In January this year, the workers union and the senior staff association of the electoral commission served notice of an impending strike over poor salaries and conditions of service.
