Former minister Dr Mary Grant dies at 88

Dr Mary Grant, a former member of the Council of State and former member of erstwhile Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), has died at the age of 88.

Former minister Dr Mary Grant dies at 88

Dr Grant reportedly passed away on Sunday at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.

Dr Mary Grant entered politics when she was appointed the deputy PNDC secretary for health in 1985.

She led Ghana’s delegation to many international conferences including World Health Organisation (WHO) general assemblies in Geneva, WHO regional conferences in Africa.

She was a member of Ghana’s delegation to the Beijing Conference on Women’s Rights in 1995.

At the 39th Annual General Conference in 1997, the Ghana Medical Association awarded Dr Grant a certificate of honour for her concern for the welfare of doctors.

She received a state award in the same year for her “wise and forthright counsel as a member of the Council of State”.

She is survived by six children and four grandsons.
