Bernice Starnes, 86, loves to spend time outdoor and often takes a couple of minutes to sit outside her apartment building talking to people who walk by. However, she never expected this would happen to her in full daylight. One day, the senior was enjoying her day until a woman approached her, greeted and then quickly grabbed her purse and ran away. Bernice’s bag held her money and a bank card.
Back at high school, Bernice was a star track runner. The strong athlete inside her wanted to chase the criminal, but her 86-year-old body was too old and exhausted for this trial.
Fortunately, surveillance camera caught the robbery scene, which helped police track down the thief. A photo of the alleged robber was released in no time and later that day, the coldhearted attacker was arrested and charged with grand larceny.
Being interviewed by multiple news outlets, the old woman burst into tears describing how weak she felt upon realizing that she was no longer able to follow her instincts and control own body. That feeling of helplessness was very frustrating, as previously Bernice always could defend herself.
But Bernice’s story ends up on good terms. Police officers in her community were so touched by her story that they gave their money to compensate for what had been stolen. Bernice couldn’t hold back tears, but this time, they were happy tears.
