The National Founder’s Day was set aside as a public holiday to commemorate the birthday of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah of blessed memory.

Ghana's Founders' day is observed on September 21 of every year to honour the founding fathers of our Motherland, especially Kwame Nkrumah.

In 2015, September 21st was set aside as the National Founder’s Day, a public holiday to commemorate the birthday of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

September 21st is also kept as the National Volunteer Day. It creates the best opportunity for you to engage in a selfless act of help to your community. Groups like GhanaThink and others organise small volunteering events around the country.

2. Presenting a unique play or performance

You can hold a short play or performance that highlights the birth of Ghana, and how Kwame Nkrumah led the country to independence.

3. Wear national colours

There's no better day than the Founder’s Day of Ghana to immerse yourself in wearing the colours of the country. Some citizens choose to wear clothes that have the flag design on them or decide to wear the red, yellow (gold) and green. You can have a lot of fun trying to look as patriotic as possible using just these colours.

4. Be extra patriotic

We'd expect all Ghanaians to be patriotic on every day, but considering that the Founder’s Day is set aside to celebrate Kwame Nkrumah, who's patriotism and commitment to Ghana has been hailed over the years, it won't hurt to be extra patriotic today.

5. Enjoy a picnic with family or friends.

Get together around at least 1 pm or so to spend the afternoon together.

Nkrumahism is defined as the socialist and pan-Africanist principles and policies associated with the Ghanaian political leader Kwame Nkrumah; adherence to or support of these principles.
