New study shows lean people at high risk of bowel cancer

Research has shown lean people who appear healthy may also be at increased risk of bowel cancer.

The findings suggest there is a connection between bowel cancer and elevated insulin levels among both obese and lean people.

According to study scientist Dr Marc Gunter of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in France, high insulin levels are common in obese individuals but lean people could also have raised insulin levels due to poor diet or sedentary lifestyle.

The study used over 700 participants who were tested for levels of an insulin biomarker, C-peptide, in the blood.

Bowel cancer is sometimes called colon or rectal cancer and also the third most common cancer in the world. It often begins in the large than in the small bowels (intestines). The main symptoms are blood in stools, abdominal pain and change in bowel habits.
