A new, $2.3 billion airport, constructed and unveiled outside of Ashgabat, Turkmenistan's capital city, looks impressive. The falcon-like structure, which resembles the logo of the country's national carrier, Turkmenistan Airways, can process over 1,600 passengers an hour.
According to Turkmenistan's president Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, the airport's new terminal would have the capacity to serve 17 million passengers a year, while the freight terminal could handle 200,000 tons of freight annually. Unfortunately, only 105,000 tourists visited the country in 2015 which made a lot of people question if anyone would actually use it. But here, we aren’t going to speculate on tourist perspectives of Turkmenistan. Let’s just have a look at the new building and decide whether it’s worth billions.
