Kumawood movies are not for the faint-hearted.
No, they are not!!!
If you're not left clutching your ribs and gasping with air from uncontrollable laughter, you'd be left visibly frustrated at what others would find incredibly ingenious and downright funny. Most often the very reasons why we love films from Kumasi, are the same reasons we hate to love films from Kumasi.
Here are all the reasons why we can't give up on our hate-love relationship with Kumawood movies at YEN.
1. Bad, bad dialogue
To be fair, no one watches Kumawood movies for the dialogue, we're just here for what we mentioned in #12 actually
2. The most outrageous titles
And how quick the Kumawood directors are about turning any trending topic into a movie probably deserves a mention in the Guinness Book of Records.
3. Numerous parts
One could easily summarize a 12-part Kumawood movie into a 2-part movie at most, but then again, Kumawood directors love to drag story-lines like Mahama explaining why Ghana is not moving forward.
4. Crazy casting
The above two actors are supposedly young students in High School according to a Kumawood movie. And don't be surprised when a 14 year old is casted to play a role that would have easily suited a 30 year old.
5. Same faces in all movies
This happens all the darn time. It is not a Kumawood movie if Agya Koo, Liwin, Kwaku Manu, Akrobeto are not in it.
6. Witch + Ghosts + Juju Men
There's must be at least two of the above in every Kumawood release. A good Kumawood film that stays true to the game would make use of all three.
7. Crazy ghosts
Talking about ghosts, did you know that in Kumawood films, ghosts use mobile phones?
Or that a person can die with braids, come back as a ghost with dreadlocks or short hair ??
Or that they can be a whole movie about ghosts for the ghost to only appear in Part 4?
8. Kumawood special effects
No one knows who asked Kumawood directors to churn out action movies, but whoever did needs to tell them to stop ASAP. The special effects used in these movies could make you cry, laugh or both (if that's your kinda thing).
9. Terrible makeup
And we don't mean terrible makeup like Afia Schwarzneggar's makeup
We mean terrible makeup like this!!!
Can anyone explain that?
And the above is just the mildest form we could find. Insults are like a core part of Kumawood movies. Many industry players like Maame Dokono, have bemoaned the insults in Kumawood movies to no avail.
12. Too much c̶o̶m̶e̶d̶y̶ fooling
Most Kumawood movies are comical ones, but they are not funny in a funny way, they are funny in a stupid way...and we totally love it.
Despite all these, we still can't get enough of our Kumawood movies. We just LOVE IT.
