Judges and magistrates are asking for an improved remuneration and working conditions to help them deliver better service.
According to Supreme Court judge, Justice William Atuguba, the rule of law and justice are at risk of being compromised if necessary action is not taken to address the salaries and working conditions of the judges.
Speaking at the annual magistrates and judges’ conference, Mr Atuguba said working under such conditions is particularly stressful against a background of poor remuneration and other working condition.
"The conditions of service of judges in this country are simply a disgrace. It is felt that judges do not receive a living wage and that their salaries are inadequate to enable them to live in dignity and to maintain their families as they should,” he said.
Justice Atuguba's comments come at a time the judiciary is faced with fighting their dented image after the revelations in the Anas judicial scandal.
