Commercial vehicles, especially trotro and taxis, are popular means of transportation in Ghana.
Many people do not enjoy using them because they are mostly rickety and it is inconvenient being transported in them. However, they are affordable, so commuters tend to prefer them to taxis and 'okadas', which are relatively expensive.
Here are six ridiculous seatmates that will make you never want to board a trotro
1. The nosy passengers
This person is probably the worst ever. They would be stretching their neck over your shoulder to make out what you're doing on your mobile phone. The worst ones would probably start "umming" and "ahhing" in reaction to what you're typing.
2. The storytelling passengers
This person will totally bombard you with stories of their escapades and past experiences that you are not even interested yet. The weirdest thing is he is shouting directly into your ears as if he’s preaching in church.
3. The passengers who eat in the trotro
They carry drinks and loads of snacks with them into the trotro. And they would be chewing the food loudly as if they had been starving for the past 14 days.
4. The sleeping passengers
A short drive from Madina to Accra Central can turn into a 3-hour bout of hell when your trotro seatmate decides to find solace in sleep. And it gets worse when there is the kind to snore or drool.
5. The DJ passengers
He/she listens to music on the loud speaker and not through the earphones. He doesn’t care that other passengers might not be conversant with the language in which the song is sung. He also assumes everyone loves the type of music he’s playing loudly on the phone. It’s even worse if he sings along, loudly.
6. The commenting passengers
These are some two or three people sitting right behind you and making sure the nonsense they are conversing or arguing about is heard by every soul sitting in the vehicle.
