It is difficult to tell when certain household items are out-of-date and you may not even realise they also expire quickly too.
Taking note of the expiration of these 14 household items will make your home a better place.
Hairbrushes have a maximum life span of a year and should be cleaned at least once a week.
2. Your child’s dummy
Dummies must be replaced after 2-5 weeks as the latex breaks easily and the cracks could harbour some germs.
3. Kitchen sponge
You must change your kitchen sponge after 2 weeks to prevent the growth of mould and fungus. Alternatively, you could disinfect them in boiling water.
Your indoor slippers must be replaced after 6 months to avoid fungal infection on your feet.
Change your pillow after 2-3 years. Out-of-shape and overused pillows bring you nothing but neck pain and dust mites.
Replace your bra after 1-2 years. Your bra loses its shape and elasticity as well as becomes uncomfortable after this period. Similarly, changes in body shape may render your bra too small or big.
They must be changed after a year to avoid putting more stress on your joints while working out.
After 3 months the bristles begin to wear down, making toothbrush less effective. Again, you should dump your toothbrush after catching a cold or flu to prevent a recurrence.
They start to lose their potency after 3 months.
10. Kitchen spices
Ground spices lose their flavour and smell after 6 months. However, other spices which have not been ground could be kept for 1-3 years.
11. Extension lead
Replace them after 1-2 years. Power strips have a certain capacity beyond which the extension lead could go bad, having in its wake some serious consequences.
Your perfume could last for only 2 years if you keep the bottle open. But keeping the lid firmly fastened would give you an extra year.
Change your towels after 1-3 years. Washing regularly would not necessarily stop them from breeding bacteria.
14. Mosquito repellent
Mosquito repellents are only effective for 2 years so get a new one after this period or risk getting malaria.
