Court gives EC greenlight to collect filing fees

The electoral commission has been given the go-ahead to collect the GH¢ 50,000 and GH¢ 10,000 filing fee from presidential and parliamentary candidates respectively.

The order was given by an Accra high court following a filed application for an injunction against the fees by the Progressive People's Party (PPP).

Court gives EC greenlight to collect filing fees
The court injunction saw the EC earlier rejecting the filing fee of all political parties

Defending his case in court, lawyer for the PPP, Dennis Ofosu Appiah, described the filing fee as capricious and unconstitutional. He lamented that the EC was abusing its powers to exploit smaller political parties as the PPP.

Lawyer for the EC, Thaddeus Sori fiercely reacted to the charges arguing that the constitution allows the commission to determine the filing fee.

What this ruling means is that all political parties will now have to come up with the required amount of filing fees if they are willing to proceed in contesting the December elections.
