Following the disqualification of close to 12 presidential candidates, the Electoral Commission (EC) has ordered for heavy security detail at its headquarters in Accra so as to forestall any backlash from supporters of the affected parties.
Checks reveal that various entry points of the building have been detailed with the tightest security. These include the main entrance to the EC building where at least three fully-armed policemen have been deployed.
Police personnel were also spotted sitting in a police armoured vehicle, with their eyes scanning through the people who attempted to access the EC building. The Adabraka district police commander, CSP Kwesi Ofori, said the police would maintain their presence at the electoral commission throughout the election period.
EC boss, Charlotte Osei, has argued that the disqualification of the 12 presidential candidates including PPP's Paa Kwesi Ndoum is due to cases of forgery in their respective nomination forms. Meanwhile, most of the affected political parties have threatened a legal suit against the EC as they seek court redress.
