Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice-presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), says the party will introduce Arabic as an optional subject to the junior and senior high curriculum if it wins power in December.
He said although Arabic is a course at the university level, it is not studied at the basic level, so students lack the foundation on which to build if they opt to learn Arabic at the university.
He said the introduction of Arabic at the basic level will also create jobs for Islamic clerics who will be teaching the subject.
Dr Bawumia, who was speaking to party faithful at Tamale, reiterated the NPP’s pledge to restore the teacher trainee allowance if the party wins the election.
He went on to condemn calls by some members of the National Democratic Congress for President Mahama to be retained because he is a northerner.
Stressing that Mahama had failed, he described himself as a more competent northerner than the president.
