A lot of people have been kicking against the idea of celebrities venturing into politics perhaps based on what history has taught us.
In Ghana, taking sides in the issue of partisan politics means a life sentence to whichever side you choose and unfortunately, this has gone against some celebrities who used to be in top form before they went partisan.
Here are four of the most notable celebrities who went down in their careers after openly engaging in politics in Ghana.
1. Clement Bonney – Mr. Beautiful
He used to be one of the most sought after actors in the Kumawood movie industry until he declared his support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Although a very good actor with a great sense of humour, Mr. Beautiful does not feature in a many movies like before. He admitted himself that it was due to his joining of the NDC that most of the movie makers side-lined him. He has however vowed never to stop campaigning for the party.
2. Jewel Ackah
Jewel was one of the first celebrities to engage openly in partisan politics in Ghana and unfortunately, he has had to pay with the rest of his career for that move. He recorded the first NDC campaign song which is still used by the party. Jewel whose career was at an all time high at the time, suffered a lot with his association. He has never been able to get back to that level again.
3. Grace Omaboe – Maame Dokono
Maame Dokono was one of the most popular actresses in Ghana until she met her career doom by aligning herself with a political party in a bid to become a Member of Parliament. She contested as a parliament candidate on the ticket of the NDC but lost. After having issues with the Rawlings’, she defected to the opposition New Patriotic Party. She contested as a parliamentary candidate on the ticket of the NPP and lost once again and since then has not foot a steady footing back in the creative arts industry. She recently said in an interview that she regrets going into partisan politics.

4. Lucky Mensah
Highlife musician, Lucky Mensah was doing quite well until he decided to join and campaign for the NDC in 2008. After his association with the NDC and the NDC coming to power in 2008 his career took a dip for the worse. He stated in an interview that he was not making any sales and neither was he receiving any attention from the NDC. A few months ago, the singer decided to throw his support behind the leading opposition party, NPP in the hopes of getting a better life. Many have since called him an ingrate and a gold digger.
