A-G tells court to block Amidu from retrieving Woyome money

The Attorney General's Department has opposed a suit filed by Martin Amidu, praying the Supreme Court to allow him to examine Alfred Agbesi Woyome, who owes the country GHC51 million.

The deputy AG, Dominic Ayine, asked the court to dismiss Amidu's petition, which he called unconstitutional because, according to him, only the AG's department has the mandate to retrieve the money.

Ayine also prayed to court to expunge portions of Amidu's petition which alleged that President Mahama had ordered the AG to discontinue efforts to retrieve the money from Woyome because it could affect his reelection chances, according to a report by classfmonline.com.

The AG, Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, had filed a suit at the court seeking to conduct an oral examination of Woyome in relation to the GHC51 million debt. But she later withdrew it without providing any plausible explanation.

The decision prompted Amidu to file a suit, asking the court to allow him carry out the examination.
