President John Dramani Mahama has joined the section of Ghanaians who think social media can plunge the nation into chaos on Election Day.
Addressing leadership of organized labour at the Flagstaff House Tuesday, President Mahama said, stakeholders such as political parties, clergy, and the Peace Council must agree and commit to what he has labelled as a Common Platform where election results will filter in.
According to him, it is only through this way that distortion of election results on social media can be avoided.
“One of the things we need to look out for is the current social media and the kind of misinformation that is thrown out on social media. Because of the anonymity of social media people just concoct anything, I have been the main target of a lot of these concoctions [which are] absolute falsehood.
“But the threat of national security is that if someone puts false election results on social media that somebody is winning then that party doesn’t win...it could create a major problem for us,” he stressed.
