Mahama - No contradiction on paying nurse's trainee allowances

President Mahama took his turn on a relatively 'hot seat' last night on the state broadcaster organized Evening Encounter and denied claims that government has decided to pay nurse's trainee allowances is a contradiction to governments previous decision discontinue payment of said allowances.

“We decided that we were going to migrate them onto the Students Loan so we stopped the trainee allowances in order to use the funds, instead, to ensure that it created more opportunities for nurses to be employed," said the president, speaking on the issue of why the allowances were discontinued in the first place, "Then our attention was drawn back to the fact that the trainee nurses don’t qualify because the Students' Loan Act does not allow them to be on Students’ Loan,.”

Speaking on the maiden edition on the state broadcaster's Evening Counter, and responding to question from the audience on the allowance issue, the president pressed that there was no contradiction in the payment of trainee allowances.

These allegations were further fueled when after Vice President, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, defended government's decision to discontinue payment of trainee allowances, only to have the president re-instate trainee nurse's allowance payments.
