Charlotte Osei must withdraw her recounting comment

Sam Okudzeto, a prominent Ghana Lawyer has asked the chair of the Electoral Commission Charlotte Osei to withdraw her comments about recounting votes should the need for it arise. He state that the comment would cause misunderstanding and conflict.

Charlotte Osei made the remark in a Facebook Live interview with BBC two weeks ago, saying that if the elections results were too close to call, she would have all votes recounted to determine who was the true winner.

"Our elections in Ghana tend to be very close, if it is so close, it might be prudent to stop, inform everyone, do a total recount and be sure of what we are announcing finally," she said.

However, the former head of the Ghana Bar Association stated that only a candidate can ask for a recount of the votes and not the commission, adding that it was against the rules.

He advised that the EC chair remain humble and withdraw her statement. He further said that her comment had the tendency to create a wrong impression of the commission and lose the confidence Ghanaians had in it.
