The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a statement to teachers, stressing that December 7 is not a holiday.
“It is to be noted that, Wednesday, 7 December 2016 is not a holiday, therefore all teachers, students and educational workers as supposed to be at post after voting.
“Heads of schools are requested to follow the academic calendar as planned and are to comply with the above directive,” the GES said.
The statement also stated that public schools would vacate on December 15.
Many Ghanaians have called on the government to declare a public holiday on December 7 to enable more people to vote.
But this statement from the GES is the strongest indication yet that the government will not yield to such requests.
