Baker Hughes, Fidelity, GTP sack 460 workers

The unemployment situation in the country is about get worse as three top companies plan to lay off a combined 460 workers before the end of 2016.

According to a report by The Finder newspaper, Baker Hughes Ghana Limited, a top-tier oilfield service company, is laying off 130 workers, Ghana Textile Printing (GTP) is retrenching 130 staff, while Fidelity Bank is also retrenching some 200 workers.

While Fidelity Bank blamed ongoing staff rationalisation and restructuring within the bank for the sacking, GTP blamed the pirating of designs of Ghanaian textile firms which are sent to China, pirated and imported into Ghana.

Baker Huges, according to the report, is sacking the 130 workers because the company could not secure new contracts to execute, making the staff redundant.
