According to the Regional Police Command in the Ashanti Region, the bags of thumb-printed ballot papers are fake.
The Regional Police Commander, Nathan Kofi Boakye revealed to Accra-based radio station Citi FM that the Ashanti Regional Director of the of Electoral Commission (EC), Serebour Quarcoo confirmed that the purported ballot papers were not genuine upon further investigations.
COP Boakye stated that the EC officer told the Police that the thumb-printed ballots were "not part of the materials which means they are fake."
In the early hours of Monday, wild reports from Kumasi suggested that the Police had intercepted three bags stuffed with material reported to be thumb-printed presidential ballot papers found at the Madison Hotel at TUC in the Ashanti Regional capital.
The ballots were allegedly thumb-printed to show a vote for the incumbent president and National Democratic Congress presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama.
According to COP Boakye, even as the police acted on a tip-off from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the recovered ballot papers were fake ones and not same as the ones issued by the EC.
