Woman Claims Was Divorced On WhatsApp 10 Days After Wedding

A 24-year-old Muslim woman in Kerala, India has claimed that hardly ten days into her marriage, her husband divorced her on WhatsApp.

She said that her 33-year-old husband left for Dubai to work for a Public Relations firm soon after their wedding in February 2014.

The woman, studying at a dental college, explained that her newly-wed 33-year-old husband then sent her a message on WhatsApp asking for a divorce.

When she reportedly sought to know what his reason for divorce was, the man told her:

The man told NDTV that he felt “mentally harassed” by his wife’s family.

The dejected woman complained that the addresses of his Dubai residence and workplace that he had given her, turned out to be fake.

She added that after her husband abandoned her, her in-laws kicked her out of the house.

The woman then decided to lodge a complaint at India’s family court and the Women's Commission, and also filed a criminal case against him.

She claimed that her family had paid the groom Indian Rupees 10 lakh and 660 grams of gold as dowry, and that they now want it back.

The man, however, denied this, saying that he didn’t have the gold that supposedly came from her family.

Meanwhile another woman in Durban, South Africa, has filed a case to annul her husband’s third marriage, which she found out via WhatsApp.

According to South African daily The Mercury, the woman, who is the first wife of a well-known local radio and television presenter, received a WhatsApp message from this third wife informing her that the ceremony had taken place at the Department of Home Affairs in October 2014.

The news outlet reported that the woman is still “reeling from shock” after receiving this news.

She applied to the Durban High Court to invalidate that marriage, based on the country’s Recognition of Customary Marriages Act, which states that a husband in a customary marriage must first apply via the courts if he wished to enter into another marriage.

Wife number three attended court and said that she needed to consult a lawyer before responding.

The man, who has children with all three wives, has not yet filed any notice of opposition.
