6 popular footballers who left football for other careers

Football is a game of action, emotion, celebration and definitely a sport everyone loves to get involved with.

That is basically why many jump at the opportunity to be football stars.

But after announcing retirement, most professional footballers go down one of two routes – to either become a pundit or a coach.

But in this article, YEN.com.gh looks at the footballers who left the game to get greener pastures in other professions that has no link to sports.

1. George Weah - Politician

Goerge Weah still remains the only African to win FIFA’s prestigious Ballon d’Or award for the world’s best footballer.

However, many didn’t see the former AC Milan chasing her career in politics after his retirement as a player in 2003, at the age of 37.

In mid-November 2004, Weah ran in the October 2005 presidential election. He was widely considered a favourite in the election, and was the candidate for the Congress for Democratic Change. However, he finished runner-up in a closely-fought run-off with incumbent Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

However, he will have a second attempt at becoming the president of Liberia when Liberians march to the poll in 2017.

2. Dani Osvaldo - Musician

Former Italian footballer Dani Osvaldo quit football for a career in music.

Surprisingly, Osvaldo chose to kiss a career in football goodbye despite being offered a huge deadline day contract of £2.1million a year by Italian side, Chievo Verona.
