In an interview with Citifmonline, Mr. Nukpenu pointed out that if there was someone to blame, former President Rawlings could not be left out. He argued that when President Rawlings publicly painted the NDC out as corrupt, this allowed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to capitalize on that during their campaign.
According to certain political analysts, many Ghanaians voted against the incumbent government in last week's polls due to multiple corruption scandals during the administration's four year term in office.

Speaking on the President Elect's acceptance speech, Mr. Anthony Nukpenu expressed his aggravation at Nana Akufo Addo's expression of gratitude towards former President Rawlings.
He said: “One of the tools he gave them was corruption, and Nana Akufo-Addo in his acceptance speech congratulated him. On what basis was he congratulating him, thanking him so much for what he has done for him?”
He also pointed out that former President Rawlings refused to meet NDC officials, but rather met with NPP executives prior to the elections.
