With members of parliament having been elected since the last general elections, it is now time for parliament to elect a Speaker of Parliament, a process that is scheduled to commence today.

In a democracy, the office of the Speaker of Parliament is essential to the political dynamic. It is also the third highest office in the land, ranking third after the President, and vice president in the line of succession.
In other words, should it happen that both the president and vice president were somehow no longer capable of executing their roles, the Speaker of Parliament would then take up the mantle.

Speaking Joy News, Parliament’s Acting Director of Public Affairs, Kate Addo, explained all Member of Parliament will be given the proper credentials in order for them to participate in the voting process.
"The life of a Parliament ends with that Parliament so regardless of whether you were a member of the fourth parliament and the fifth parliament and the sixth parliament, you are still regarded as entering a new parliament, therefore, the processes and procedures must be followed," said Madam Addo, explaining why the need for new credentials are necessary.

The President Elect, Nana Akufo Addo, is expected to name two nominees for the position
All three previous Speakers of Parliament in Ghana's Fourth Republic have been elected from outside of parliament, although should a sitting Member of Parliament be elected to the position, that Member of Parliament would have to vacate their seat.
