By popular account, 2016 has been a dismal year, with many well known - and well loved - celebrities passing away both in Ghana and abroad. At this point, one can only be thankful to have survived such a tragic year still feeling optimistic about future prospects.
So in light of this truth here's a list of some heartbreaking things that occurred during the last 365 days. Things that Ghanaians lived through and came away still feeling positive regardless of how hopeless they were.
5. Assassination of Joseph Boakye-Danquah
Member of Parliament (MP) for Abuakwa North, Mr. Joseph Boakye-Danquah's death took the entire country by surprise. Death in and of itself is always a tragic thing, but to be murdered in your own home by an intruder is - at least in Ghana - both tragic and scary. Nevertheless, the fact that Ghanaians bounced back from this tragedy is a sure sign that Ghana's populace are resilient.
4. Death of Comedian Samuel Kwadwo Boaben, a.k.a. Bob Okala.

Bob Okala, born Samuel Kwadwo Boaben, was a celebrated comedian that many Ghanaians - both young and old - will remember fondly. After a live performance at the Koforidua Jackson Park, in an event organized by the management of Joy Industries Limited, Bob Okala collapsed immediately after his performance. Upon being rushed to the hospital, the well known comedian was pronounced dead on arrival.
3. Death of Danny Nettey
The death of Danny Nettey, a musician and songwriter, took the entire country by surprise. Before his sudden and unexpected passing, family members say that he was in high spirits and even prayed with his family before he retired to bed. Witnesses say that he was found in the early hours on the morning of July 15th, unconscious and unresponsive. Alas, once he was rushed to a medical facility, a doctor pronounced him dead upon arrival.
2. Vibrant Fiya's Death
When a person dies while they're still at their prime, the death is felt more acutely simply because of the prospects left unexplored. Vibrant Faya's death was no different, especially considering the way he died. Born Emmanuel Kojo Quayeson, Vibrant Faya died in a vehicular accident.
1. Trade Fair gas explosion
Though there are varying reports as to the cause of the explosion, most will agree that the gas explosion which occurred around 5:30 to 6:00 p.m. at the Louis Gas filling station was the worst disaster to have occurred over the past 365 days. With the official death toll at 6, with dozens of people sustaining injuries, not to mention the amount of property loss, this gas explosion without a doubt, will be remember for years to come.
