The Minister for Sports, Nii Lante Vanderpuije, said in an interview with Accra-based Starr FM that the supporters died because they could not handle the shock of the defeat.
“We have reports of people committing suicide. Yes, I’ve heard of about three across the country. People could just not stand it… Even me, I broke down,” he said.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo secured 5,716,026 votes, representing 53.85%, to win the election.
Mahama managed 4,713,277 votes, representing 44.40%.
The over one million vote difference has stunned the NDC and has prompted the party to set up a committee to investigate the massive loss.
