In December 2016, Ghanaians lashed out at the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Jon Benjamin, for purportedly making a distasteful joke about Ghana’s outgoing president John Mahama in a tweet he will later delete concerning the “inauguration” of harmattan.
In the heat of the moment, some people started the hashtag #JonBenjaminMustGo on social media to perhaps send the message to his bosses that Ghana could no longer stand his sarcasm and unconventional diplomatic utterances.
Well, it seems Santa finally came to Ghana bearing the gift many had wished for, for Christmas.
In recent tweets the commissioner shared publicly, he revealed – in what may be an answered prayer – that he was set to leave the country for good in a few months.
There had already been rumours of this depature of the commissioner from Ghana, but now Mr. Benjamin himself has proven them to be true.
He wrote, “I’m leaving GH in the middle of this year, sadly.”
He also said to another user who had asked enquired about his stay in Ghana that, “…I’m going home to London after 12 straight years overseas.”
This new information will certainly make some Ghanaians very happy as they couldn’t take anyone “disrespecting” their president any more.
