An ECOWAS mediation team led by Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari with assistance from former Ghana president John Mahama was scheduled to meet Jammeh for talks in the Gambian capital of Banjul on Wednesday.

However, the meeting has now been postponed to Friday by the request of the outgoing Jammeh.

The embattled Gambian leader was defeated in a presidential election last December by opposition leader Adama Barrow, but has refused to step down, insisting the election was blighted by irregularities.

Jammeh’s decision has led to unrest in Gambian with many citizens fleeing out of the country for safety.

An ECOWAS team has therefore been instituted to help resolve the problems of the tiny West African nation.

On Monday President Buhari revealed that ECOWAS will do its best to restore peace back to Gambia, reiterating that dialogue will be used in order to avoid further unrest.

Jammeh contested the result of the elections at the country’s Supreme Court and had hoped for a swift overturn. But the Supreme Court has also postponed the hearing, leading to Jammeh’s decision to push his meeting with the ECOWAS mediation team to Friday.

The chief Justice of Gambia’s Supreme Court, Emmanuel Fagbenle said on Tuesday that they ”can only hear this matter when we have a full bench of the Supreme Court”.

He added that Gambia lacked extra judges to hear the case.

Due to Gambia’s lack of trained professionals, they rely on foreign judges from other countries to staff their courts.
