According to the Madina Divisional Police Crime Officer, Superintendent of Police Mr Joseph Oppong, Mr. Yarkah apparently visited the Christian Praise International Church for the first time on December 31st, and asked if he could assist them with the handling of their musical instruments.

Following the service, the suspect helped the men of the church pack up all the musical instruments into their store room, and after which everyone went to their respective homes.

It is alleged that Mr. Yarkah then came back to the church with a vehicle, broke into the church storeroom, and stole the instruments.

Mr. Oppong stated that during the course of the investigation police got intelligence suggesting that Mr. Yarkah had been involved in the theft, at which time the suspect had gone into hiding. Police later caught up with Ben Kwesi Yarkah where he was hiding with the instruments in question, at his girlfriend's place in Madina Estates on January 8th, 2017.

During interrogations, Ben Kwesi Yarkah told the police that he only intended to borrow the instruments in order to use them for a crusade he intended to hold. This even though he never sought the permission of the church's officials.
