The Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, ASP Mohammed Yusif Tanko has disclosed his unit may not be able to carry out an arrest of the Asawase Constituency lawmaker, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, should he carry through his threat of forming a vigilante group.
Speaking on Ultimate FM, ASP Mohammed Yusif Tanko said it will be difficult to arrest him if he does follow through with his threat because he is an MP, and as such arresting him required certain protocols.
“We cannot arrest him because he is an MP. We will however be monitoring and investigating the matter and will urge the MP to help us if he knows who the victims are. Indeed we have received reports of some persons taking over government installations but we are unable to link them to any political party," he said.
On Monday, a furious Muntaka threatened to form a vigilante group to counter attacks of persons believed to be supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) if the police failed to act within a given period.
The Asawase MP claimed these persons whom he described as 'hooligans', have gained notoriety in unlawfully seizing state facilities and attacking staff while the police watched unperturbed.
Remarking further on the issue, ASP Tanko urged the lawmaker and minority chief whip to bring the victims to write their statements to help them in their investigations since the MP himself is not a victim and cannot be briefed on the extent to which the investigations have reached.
“If he contacts us he will be briefed but should he do, we will be able to update him from time to time on the extent of the investigations into the matter”, he added.
