Kofi B. Bentil, a private lawyer has called for the conversion of the Ghana Legal Council, into an examination body, and for the Law School to be scrapped.
Taking to his Facebook wall, the member of the OccupyGhana pressure group wrote, "There is no real debate. The GLC must become an examining body like ACCA or ICA not a school. Legal education must not be fettered. No one must be restricted from becoming a lawyer. There will never be an overproduction of lawyers. Bad lawyers will always lack clients. Good lawyers will always have clients."
Mr Bentil, who is also the Vice President of civil society group Imani Africa, also started an online petition to gather support towards pushing for the General Legal Council to be converted into an examination body.
“OPEN UP LEGAL EDUCATION; I just created an important petition at iPetitions.com. THE GENERAL LEGAL COUNCIL MUST BECOME AN EXAMINING BODY NOT A SCHOOL, AND ALLOW ALL QUALIFIED CANDIDATES TO TAKE THE BAR EXAMS, NOT JUST THEIR STUDENTS AT THE GHANA SCHOOL OF LAW. Please show your support by signing my petition,” he wrote on his Facebook wall.
